Pixels to Paint

Draw with pixels then let the paint spread.

Try it here
A script B is made drawn out of purple and black squares that have a bleeding painterly effect. Next to the B is a similarly illustrated pattern and next to that is a palette of 3 colors.

Concept

A drawing tool, made in p5.js, that encourages users to create mini works of art, by combining pixels and simulated paint spreading.

How it works

Pick a color from the screen and select a box to change the colors in the 13x13 enlarged pixel grid. When you are satisfied, hit enter and watch the "paint spread" of the most recent color that you added

This is a drawing tool that explores the combination of highly-controlled pixel drawing and a less controlled type of paint or ink flow. (This is still being worked out, as the ink spread effect is currently too formulaic.) This sketch is also an attempt to use some of the concepts from Tyler Hobbs' "How to Hack a Painting" essay. Future improvements include improving the shape deformation to improve the ink spread, and the addition of symmetry builders (drawing symmetrically with this tool seems to yield the best visual results).

This work was created during a workshop on Generative Type, taught by SpaceType. It was a great class and the course materials are available here.
