Exploring both textile creation and computing, I set out to see about using python to "weave" together videos. I first needed to do some basic learning about textile development to get an understanding of how and why machinery evolved to solve problems for artisans. Working with simple paper structures, I felt like I got enough of a sense for the mechanisms of synchronized lifting and sliding to be able to build a script that could similarly work for digital videos.
The code starts by slicing the both video clips into strips and then alternates between "lifting" sets of vertical strips and layering in a horizontal strip from a separate video. The code and rendering process is very slow. More experiments to continue.
I came across this article about a video where Will Ferrell and John C Reilly recreate a performance of The Little Drummer Boy, which was originally made by David Bowie and Bing Crosby. Their commitment to recreating it shot for shot is pretty impressive. It seemed the perfect candidate to explore for a video weave.
Additional sketches include some personal footage from my family, and a woven video of John Cage 4'33" × Mirtha Dermisache — Libro Nº 6.
