Free Write
For Day 2 of our 6-day making sprint, I sat down to do a free write. I ended up writing about the relationship that I have with a product in my home (non-stick pans) which has been complicated by the reports of teflon-related cancers. What responsibilities do we have as consumers? Is it ever possible to cross the threshold of off-setting the initial damages that were caused when these products were first introduced into the consumer space? I'm thinking too about the diamond engagement ring that I wear everyday. We were fortunate to have a ring passed on to us from my husband's family. So we didn't have to spend money on something that was potentially produced in an unethical manner. But we don't know the entire history of the stone, prior to when it entered our family's possession. Is it still carrying that history with it? What is my responsibility as its current owner? *Note to self to do some research in the history of "curses" and "cursed items"*
At the end of the first one, as I was reflecting, I felt like there was more that was kind of rattling around so I did a second free write as a follow up. This free write ended up being more about people and stories, and what we hide and what we show. The importance of creating a dedicated space to ask and explore parts of our world and our histories. I think that's a bit of what these processes are, and a bit of the general idea of a make-a-thing challenge. Give yourself space and see what the results can be.
